Birr Chamber of Commerce under the presidency of Martin Kearns in conjunction with Sportsrecireland (a local company hosting the Kinnitty castle Half marathon on Saturday November 27 ) have combined resources to host a 10K run in the Georgian town of Birr on Saturday December 4th at 11am. The event will be called the Chamber of commerce 'Shop local Run'.

On the day the local Chamber will be switching on the christmas lights to formally launch the festive season. The 10K run will provide the ideal motivation to immediately take out the walking/running shoes and apparel. It is well timed for participants who wish to maintain their fitness level post the Dublin city marathon or indeed those who wish to work on their fitness pre Christmas or equally those who wish to kick start their new year resolutions for 2011.
It is hoped that the run will generate excitement and activity around the sporting town of Birr for all ages and athletic abilities.

It is anticipated that up to 200 people will take part.The run will start in the square and head down main street, before taking a right turn down Castle Street continuing towards the Croghan road.The athletes will continue for two miles out the Croghan road.At that point they will return back towards town.The participants will take a right at the castle walls and head back towards square via Green street.The runners will then head down main street ,turn right and return to the finish line in the square via Green street.
The event will start and finish in the square outside Dooly's hotel.
All support for the athletes on the day would be very welcome to create a positive and uplifting amosphere.
The race is open to both male and female, walkers,joggers, athletes and elite.
Online registration will be taken on the Precision Timing website, refer to
www.precisiontiming.net , in addition, entries will be accepted on the morning of the race in Dooly's hotel between 9am to 10.30 am.
Competitors will be professionally timed using the Precision Timing system and in addition each participant will receive a Shop local 10K tee shirt.
The entry fee is € 20.00 of which € 5.00 will be donated to the Birr Lions Club.
Prizes will be presented to the first, second and third male and female finishers.
In addition a number of excellent prizes generously donated by local businesses will be raffled among all competitors.
The event is A.A.I.( athletics association of Ireland) approved and the course has been measured by accredited AAI personnel.A water station will be situated at the midpoint of the course .
Medical personnel will be in attendance.
Local business people have been very supportive and generous in their sponsorship of this new event.this event will help kick start the Christmas season.
The local gardai have agreed to help out with activities on the day.
Dooly's hotel will have the appropriate pre and post meals available on the menu and intend to hold an over 40's disco on the night.
